Notes from the Artist – ‘ Abyss ‘
 
The painting for me is not an outward representation of a thing but a presentation of ‘the stream of consciousness through image’.
As "The Abyss”, the title of a picture implicates, I am looking for human nature ‘striving for absolute value’, through observing ‘a deep, delicate, and fundamental being’, not the humans who anticipate ‘superficial and material need’. So, the self, desire, trauma, memory, and dream which are continuously floating from the abyss are now being presented in my paintings in tranquil repercussion.
 
The most significant element in an abstract mode as a way of presentation of pure behavior is the repetition of action. Based on this principle, I filled canvases with various lines, strong contrast of colors, and diverse variants of forms developed on the regular and irregular repetition of action.
 
The black color for me is not the black itself but has relative meanings. As brightness can be bright only with darkness and darkness adds its deep meaning only along with brightness, the black signifies a different kind of birth in addition to the meaning of death and darkness.
 
I tried to show more deep composition of canvases by repeating the action of making lines before the ground colors which are mixed with the media dry on  Hanji ( Korean traditional hand-made papers ). The experiment of form through transformed canvases and the exploration of the plastic elements in paintings constitute the inside and outside of my work.
 
So the inseparable relation between content and form will be the most cardinal point for my paintings which I will pursue.

     깊음의 미학 – 심연
 

나에게 있어 그림이란 사물의 외적 재현이 아니라 '이미지 추출에 의한 의식의 흐름'을 표현하는데 목적이 있다.

 

<심 연(深淵)>이라는 그림 제목이 의미하듯 '깊고 오묘한 인간의 근원적인 존재'를 관찰함으로 '표피적이고 물질적인
욕구를 지향하는' 인간이 아니라 '절대적인 가치를 추구하는' 인간의 본성에서 그 모습을 찾고자 함이다.
 
이렇듯 끊임없는 의문과 해답은 본인의 작품에 주된 조형행위로서 화면과 연결시켰다.
이로써 화면에 나타나는 혼란은 형과 색의 질서를 추구하게 했다.
그러므로 본인은 단순화된 추상의 형태와 절제된 색으로 삶에서 욕망을 절제하듯이 표현의 본질에 다가서려 했다.
 

나에게 있어 검은색은 색채라기 보다는 상대적인 의미의 것이다.       

밝음은 어두움이 있기에 밝아 보이고 어두움은 밝음이 있기에 그 깊이를 더 해가는
즉 죽음과 어두움이라는 의미 이외에 또 다른 탄생을 말하고자 하는 작가의 정신 세계를 표출함이다.
 
나의 작품에서 보여지는 순수 행위의 표출 방식으로서의 추상 양식에 따라 가장 두드러진 요소는 행위의 반복이다.
 규칙 또는 불규칙적인 행위의 흔적들을 바탕에 깔고서 전개되는 다양한 선과 강렬한 색채의 대비와 함께
다채로운 형식 요소들의 변용으로 화면을 채웠다
미디움에 분채를 섞어 한지에 바르고 채 마르기 전에 긋는 행위를 반복하여 강한 색 면의 대비와 함께
분방한 필선의 다발이 주어짐으로 보다 심도 깊은 화면 구성을 보여 주려 했다.
 

때로는 변형 캔바스를 통한 형식의 실험이나 회화상의 조형 요소에 대한 탐구는 나의 작업의 안과 테두리를 이룸이다.

따라서 내용과 형식이 갖는 이 불가분의 관계는 나에게 있어서도 역시 추구해 나가야 할 작업상의 요체가 되지 않을 수 없다고 생각된다.

 

나의 회화가 추상에 그 초점이 주어지는 한, 화면에서의 내적 질서의 창출이란 과제는 필연적일 수 밖에 없다.
